Reality Check

For a brief two-hour period (and to the joy of mom and dad), over 650 freshman at  Yukon High School get a taste of what life is like on the other side.  The event is Yukon's Reality Check and gives students foresight into what life may be like as an adult.

Reality Check assigns each student a career, a salary, and a checkbook.  Moreover, these freshman are randomly assigned a martial status and up to three children.  Students are then released into the gym where a mock community awaits.  The community includes approximately 20 separate booths full of local businessmen and women who are eager to teach lessons on just how far a dollar can go.

The event, sponsored by Yukon Public Schools Community Education, involves a partnerships where the school district and local businesses come together for a day.  Community participants include bankers, realtors, physicians, dentists, tag agents, hair stylists, day care owners, car dealers, police and many other volunteers.

Reality Check provides an excellent opportunity for adolescents to gain some insight into the many responsibilities of adulthood while offering the students an opportunity to think about their career choices.  For more information, please contact the Yukon Community Education Office at (405) 354-2579.
